Concern at waste disposal in the open

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Sept 4 - The residents of Adarshapur in Kahilipara area have decried the dumping of waste in the open. Adarshapur Bylane-4 Unnayan Samiti general secretary Dhrubajyoti Sarma said littering in the open has become a worrying factor for the residents of the area.

The GMC that looks after the solid waste management in the city, engages NGOs for door-to-door collection of household waste. The waste is directly handed over to the NGOs by the residents. But littering on the street or throwing the waste in the open is becoming a regular scene here, Sarma said.

The government or the GMC should take stern action in this regard. Garbage full of plastic is found lying in every open place in our area these days. It also leads to blockage of drains which further causes waterlogging in the area, he added. A GMC source said flying squads have been formed to address issues like garbage cleaning and drain clearing.

The main duty of the flying squads is to maintain cleanliness and the drainage system of Guwahati. If city residents see any kind of garbage, they can inform the flying squads, the source said.
