GUWAHATI, March 10 � In his Budget speech, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi described tea as the State�s heritage and said that a comprehensive tea policy would soon be formulated in order to protect quality, safety and productivity of tea.
Gogoi proposed extension of the exemption of six rupees per kilogram of made tea from agriculture income tax, if exported through the inland container depot, Amingaon up to 2017-18. To encourage sale of tea through the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre and increase the levels of tax compliance, he also proposed to increase the VAT on private sale of tea from one per cent to two percent, while retaining the 0.5 per cent of VAT on auction sale through the GTAC.
