Competitions of Aryabhatta Science Centre held

SILAPATHAR, March 11 � The Aryabhatta Science Centre, Sissi Block, Dhemaji under the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC) organised its sixth block-level competitions recently at the Silapathar Science Centre with a day-long programme.

The exhibition stall was inaugurated by Dr LR Bhuyan, Scientist-D, SFRI, Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. Father Peter, Principal, Don Bosco High School, Silapathar inaugurated the drawing and extempore speech competitions.

The inaugural session was attended by Dr R Saikia, Principal, Silapathar Science College, Dr Kondinya, president, governing body of Silapathar Science College, Dr Annajyoti Gogoi, Associate Professor of Dhemaji College, Dr Kalyan Bhuyan of Dibrugarh University, besides Binod Singh and Bijoy Kanta Konwar, science teachers of Amguri Tribal HS School and Betonipam ME School respectively.

The competitions included model making (exhibition), drawing (science-based) and extempore speech (science-based). The competitors were divided into two categories � A for students of class VI-VIII and B for students of class IX-X. Altogether, 39 models were exhibited by the students from different schools within the block.

In category A, the model on health & hygiene by Dragima Priyadarsini Bhuyan and Akata Devi won the first prize, while the model �Bug Project� by Gautam Borpatragohain and Mohan Pegu was adjudged second. The model on swine flu by Dolly Sau and Anjali Basumatary bagged the third position. In category B, the model �Potato Plastic� by Prasanta Debnath and Tinku Sarma was named best, while the model �Hydraulic Rocket� by Suraj Mohato and Kamal Das bagged the second prize. The model on production of electricity from gobar gas and waste battery by Santanu Dihinghia and Madhujya Boruah and the biogas model by Sabitri Rai and Lalremruti shared the third prize.

In the drawing competition, Mohan Pegu, Bhaskar Jyoti Kuli and Simran Kumari Singh, all from Don Bosco High School, Silapathar won the first, second and third prizes respectively in category A. In category B, Karan Rai of St Peter High School, Pritom Gogoi from Betonipam High School and Tommy MS Zuwala from St Peter High School bagged the first, second and third positions respectively.

In extempore speech, Prathik Rathi from Don Bosco High School, Anuj Dutta from Sankardev Sishu Vidya Niketan, Silapathar and Priyanka Missong from Don Bosco High School bagged the first, second and third prizes respectively in category A. In category B, Santanu Dihingia from Betonipam High School, Subashini Rajkumari from Don Bosco High School and Sonu Borah of St Peter High School bagged the first, second and third positions respectively.

Prizes were distributed to the winners at the end of the programme by Dr AK Doley, District Coordinator, ASC, Dhemaji. He also informed that the first and second position holders of category A and the first position holder in category B will take part in the district-level competition of ASC later this month.
