Compensation to electrocution victim�s wife

GUWAHATI, June 11 - At the intervention of the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) into a case of death by electrocution in July, 2017 compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh was given to the wife of the victim the late Anidhar Saikia of Dhemaji by the Assam Power Distribution Corporation Limited (APDCL) on Monday.

Pratibha Saikia, widow of Anidhar Saikia was given a cheque containing the compensation amount in the presence of the full bench of the rights body comprising its Chairman Justice T Vaiphei and members NK Bora and DK Saikia at the AHRC office here.

The Commission had taken suo moto cognizance of the incident from a news item published in the local media on July 18, 2017. The diseased, Anidhar Saikia of Narauthan Balijan Gaon, Dhemaji district got electrocuted when he had climbed a tree to pluck elephant apple. Later he died due to injuries.

In connection with the case, notice was issued to the Managing Director of the APDCL to conduct an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the death of Saikia. The inquiry, which was carried out by the electrical inspector, Tezpur Zone, brought to light the fact that the APDCL was guilty of contravening the Regulation 12 (1) and 64 (3) of the Central Electricity Authority (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) regulations, 2010 as amended in 2015. And this led to the electrocution of Anidhar Saikia. The Deputy General Manager of APDCL offered to pay a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh.
