SHILLONG, Dec 6 Meghalaya Government has decided to release Rs 1.5 lakh to be given to each of the surrendered cadres of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) as part of a compensation package. The government would release Rs 1.5 lakh for each of the surrendered cadres to enable them to take up income generating initiatives after they join the mainstream, Home department sources said.

Superintendents of Police of all three Garo Hills districts have been directed to submit details of the surrendered cadres, GHP Raju, IGP (Western Range) said. Twenty GNLA cadres surrendered before Home Minister H D R Lyngdoh here on April 27. They recently expressed resentment over the delay in providing them the compensation package.

Four other GNLA ultras surrendered in October. NCP legislators led by its Opposition Leader Conrad K Sangma had met the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on this issue expressing concern on the delay. PTI
