Common national level NRC for Assam: Sarma

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 28 - State Finance Minister and BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the NRC process in State would start again when a common national-level NRC will be prepared for the entire country with a uniform base year.

Addressing the media persons here, Sarma mentioned that the present Assam NRC cannot be accepted and that he will soon inform the State Legislative Assembly about the huge financial anomalies detected by the CAG in the NRC process.

Prima facie, a huge anomaly has been detected in the NRC process by the CAG, which is evident in its inspection note, he added.

Reacting to Opposition's protest against CAB and the government's intention to override the present NRC with a national-level NRC, Sarma said that when a huge section of Assamese people and the mainstream social organizations demanded a review of the NRC, the Congress and the AIUDF are supporting the present erroneous national register.

It clearly shows whose interest is being served by the NRC. A document which satisfies people like Badaruddin Ajmal and Rockybul Hussain, cannot be allowed to decide the fate of the indigenous Assamese people, he said.

On a possible contradiction of base year of the national level NRC and the Assam Accord, Sarma responded that the accord cut-off year was not the lookout of his government.

The accord was not even endorsed by the State Legislative Assembly... If the base year in the entire country is 1951, for Assam also, same will be applicable. Similarly, if 1971 is decided as a base year for the entire country, we will have no objection. The uniformity in the entire country is needed for the success of the process, he stated.
