GUWAHATI, Dec 17 - The ambitious West Guwahati Water Supply Scheme, which proposes to cover a projected population of 5.83 lakh by 2025, meeting a drinking water demand of 107 million litres per day (MLD), will be partially commissioned by June next year. So far over 94 per cent of the work related with this project has been completed and finishing works, including hydro-testing, cleaning, washing and disinfection of the entire system of the project are now on, said sources in the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) here on Saturday.
Partial commissioning of the Central Guwahati Water Supply Scheme has also been planned by December next year. About 60 per cent of the construction work and other activities related to this project has so far been completed and for the partial commissioning of this project the spare water of the West Guwahati Scheme will be used. The West Guwahati Scheme spare water will be carried to this scheme for the purpose through a grid pipeline and about 70 per cent of the work for laying this grid pipeline has so far been completed, sources said.
The East Guwahati Water Supply Scheme is likely to be commissioned by 2021-end and laying of the transmission pipelines to interlink its reservoirs is in progress, while about 45 per cent of the work on the North Guwahati Water Supply Scheme has been completed and it is expected to be commissioned by 2019-end, sources said.
The West Guwahati Water Supply Scheme has a command area of 100.95 square km with a projected population coverage of 5.83 lakh with the capacity to meet the water demand of 107 MLD in 2025 and 8.96 lakh and 170 MLD respectively in 2040. Its work started on March 18, 2003 with a sanctioned cost of Rs 280.94 crore. Construction of over 94 per cent of this scheme is reported to be complete till date.
The GMDA is the implementing agency of the West Guwahati Scheme, and it is funded by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). Gammon India Ltd is its executing contractor and Tahal Consulting Engineers Ltd is its project management consultant.
For the Central Guwahati and North Guwahati schemes, GMDA Project Implementation Unit (PIU) is the project implementing agency and these schemes are funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Jindal-RANHILL (JV) (for intake and water treatment plant), Gammon India Ltd (for service reservoirs and transmission mains) and IVRCL (for distribution networks) are its executing contractors.
Their estimated cost is Rs 1,427 crore and JICA is funding an amount of Rs 1,183 crore, while the State is to bear an amount of Rs 244 crore as its share for the two projects. Their construction work started in March 2011. Their combined command area is 105.77 square km.
By 2025, the Central Guwahati Scheme will cover a population of 10,04,604, meeting the water demand of 191 MLD, while the North Guwahati Scheme will cover a population of 1,47, 809 meeting the water demand of 37.1 MLD.
The Central Guwahati Scheme will cover a population of 14,01,601 by 2040 meeting the water demand of 255 MLD, while the North Guwahati Scheme will cover a population of 2,39,530 meeting the water demand of 57.77 MLD that year.
For the East Guwahati Water Supply Scheme, the Assam Urban Infrastructure Investment Project (AUIIP)-GMDA are the executing agencies and the Asian Development Bank is the funding agency. Shivam Transcon Pvt Ltd and Tirupati Cement Products are its executing contractors. Its estimated cost is Rs 855.90 crore and in it the ADB share is 77.4 per cent and Assam government�s share is 22.6 per cent.
Construction of this project started on August 20, 2013 and its targeted completion date is September 30, 2021. It will cover a population of 5,10,185 meeting the water demand of 98 MLD in 2030 and a population of 8,03,920 meeting the water demand of 147 MLD in 2045.
All these schemes will be run on round-the-clock basis and will supply 135 litres of water per head per day, maintaining a pressure of 12 kg per centimetre square at the consumer end. The Brahmaputra has been taken as the source of water for these schemes and the water drawing points for these schemes are fixed at Pandu Port for West Guwahati, Kharghuli for Central Guwahati, Gopal Nagar for East Guwahati and near Ashwaklanta Temple for North Guwahati.
