GUWAHATI, May 23 Regular classes get shifted, sometimes cancelled, hostels get evacuated, students are seen wading through water-logged campus to attend classes and even the hostel kitchen gets locked for indefinite period leaving students in the lurch.
This is not a gloomy tale of a school located in flood-ravaged Lakhimpur or Dhemaji district. This is in fact the disheartening scenario of a prestigious college situated in the heart of Guwahati city. Those at the helm of affairs making tall claims about bringing the education system of the State at par with the best in the business would have to hide their face if they visit the prestigious Gauhati Commerce College (GCC) after a single spell of shower. Not only does the entire college campus get inundated following a downpour, regular classes are hard to conduct in this premier educational institute.
The situation gets worse for those who stay in the college hostel, depending entirely on the college authorities for all their needs. For, a single spell of downpour forces the hostel boarders to evacuate the ground floor completely as rain water completely inundates the area.
The hostel kitchen too has to be locked and students are left to manage their own meal. Its hard to believe but that is what is happening for the last many years in the GCC, a student of the GCC told The Assam Tribune. You are talking about a healthy academic environment but do you really mean what you say. We have serious doubts about it, a teacher of GCC opined, hinting at the indifferent attitude of the State Government.
Another senior faculty member rued, The Chief Minister during his public speech often says that his Government is according top priority to health and education, which determine the future of a nation. But, if the situation is such in prestigious college as GCC, you can easily make out what would happen to the other educational institutes, especially those located in remote areas, away from media attention. The recent road blockade programme by the students of the GCC Students Union may not go well with a section of people but that was the last option we had, said Rupjyoti Bhuyan (name changed), a B Com first year student.
Rupjyoti Bhuyan also rued that the college urinals too cannot be used during and after rains as water enter the premises.
Asked as to what needs to be done, Basav Bora, general secretary of GCC Students Union has a suggestion, Water-logging is a problem not only with the GCC but with entire Guwahati and we understand that. What we want is a proper outlet system for the water to flow out.
We will wait till next month and see what steps are initiated as was assured by the district administration. If no concrete steps are taken, we will intensify our protest, Basav asserted.
