GAURIPUR, Nov 24 � The 15-day colourful Raas festival of Coochbehar in North Bengal was inaugurated on November 21 last by Sarogi Mahapatra, the district magistrate of Coochbehar and the chairman of Debottar Trust Board of historical Madan Mohan temple amid a large number of festive people.
Floral tributes were paid before a huge cut-out of Maharani Gayatri Devi who used to open the Raas festival earlier. The clay images of Lord Krishna depicting his life and works prepared on the basis of stories of the Mahabharata, Upanishads and other religious books were colourfully decorated in as many as 50 stalls.
The 15-day programmes include Jatragan by a troupe from Kolkata besides traditional naam-kirtan, kabigaan, local folk songs and local jatra performance. A big mela has also been arranged.
An orchestra will be held on the big stage prepared on the mela maidan on December 4 next and Babul Supriya from Mumbai is scheduled to perform.
Birth centenary: The birth centenary of the first Acharyya Amarendra Nath Chakrabarty (Shree Shree Barda) was celebrated on the premises of Gauripur Satsang Bihar with a day-long programme on November 21 last.
The women�s convention held on the occasion, chaired by Renuka Barman, was addressed by Gita Singha Konwar, Sangita Saraf, Rinku Chakrabarty, Soma Bagshi and a few others.
The religious conclave, held in the evening, was presided over by Biresh Kumar Ganguli. It was addressed by Naba Kumar Paul, Raj Kumar Saraf, Gautam Brahma, Ranjit Kumar Singha and a few others. In their speeches, they stressed the need of following the ideas of Barda who dedicated his life for the sake of common people.
An art and recitation competiton was also held to mark the centenary celebration. The prize-distribtution meeting was presided over by Ambu Nath Sharma. An attractive cultural function was also arranged on the occasion.
