Collegium sticks to Justice Joseph as SC judge

By The Assam Tribune

NEW DELHI, May 11 - The Supreme Court Collegium today agreed in principle to reiterate the recommendation for elevation of Uttarakhand High Court Chief Justice KM Joseph as a judge of the apex court, after his name was returned by the Centre.

Justice Joseph had headed the bench in the Uttarakhand High Court that had quashed the Narendra Modi governments decision to impose Presidents Rule in the Congress-ruled hill State in 2016. In 2017, the Congress lost the Assembly election there.

After an hourlong deliberation, the five-member Collegium, comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, MB Lokur and Kurian Joseph, unanimously decided that Justice Josephs name should be accompanied with the recommendation of names of other Chief Justices of High Courts for elevation as judges of the Supreme Court. PTI
