GUWAHATI, June 30 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said that college teachers will have to play a proactive role in the development of human resources and catalyse the government�s bid to transform Assam into one of the most developed states of the country.
Speaking at the 65th Annual Conference of Assam College Teachers� Association at B Borooah College, Sonowal said college teachers are at important crossroads of giving shape and dimension to the innumerable students who come to them after finishing their school education. He said Assam has a lot of potential and the need of the hour is the competent human resources who can help take the State towards robust growth.
He asked the teachers to take responsibility to develop the human resources and prove the superiority of the State in the intellectual world. Referring to the saturation of advanced science and technology, Sonowal said, �We�re working for smart students, smart colleges and smart cities and hence teachers need to be smart to make our human resources the best.�
He also urged students to work hard as that is only way they can taste success in life.
Sonowal said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam and North East have found new impetus in their journey towards development. It is because of the Act East Policy enunciated by the Prime Minister that Guwahati has found importance as the hub of trade and commerce, he said.
�Guwahati has been acknowledged as the gateway to 10 South East Asian countries and three BBN countries. Considering its ever-increasing importance, the government has decided to extend the periphery of the city by notifying the State Capital Region including the neighbouring areas,� he added.
Reiterating the State government�s commitment to the development of the education sector, Sonowal said that to bring about fundamental changes, his government has introduced �Gunotsav�. Moreover, for infrastructure development of educational institutions in the State, the State government has made several interventions and the outcome is visible before everybody, he said. Sonowal also asked the Assam College Teachers� Association to seek land from the government for building an auditorium in Guwahati, which should be used for all the constructive purposes for the development of teachers and students.
The four-day annual meet that started on June 27 witnessed the presence of around 10,000 teachers from all over the State.
ACTA president Biswajit Bhuyan, its general secretary Himangshu Maral, B Borooah College principal Satyendra Nath Barman also spoke on the occasion. Prof Mihir Kanti Chowdhury, Adviser, Education, Govt of Assam, was also present along with several academicians.
