College teachers� arrear salaries this month

GUWAHATI, March 17 � The State Government will release within the current month the 15 months� arrear of the college teachers against the revision of their salaries effected in accordance with the University Grants Commission (UGC) pay scales, said Education Minister Sarat Barkataky here today.

Disclosing this, the Assam College Teachers� Association (ACTA) said in a statement here that the Education Minister assured its delegation during a discussion held here today also of completing the process of review of the promotion-related issues of the college teachers within the current month.

The Education Minister also assured the ACTA delegation steps to take up the issue of those college teachers who have been rendering their services against a meagre amount of Rs 5,000 per head as monthly salary, at the Cabinet level and thus to settle the matter.

Similarly, the Education Minister also assured the ACTA delegation steps to solve the issue of those college teachers who are serving at a fixed salary of Rs 8,000 per head per month.

The Minister also told the ACTA delegation that he would discuss the issue of raising the retirement age of the college teachers to 65 with the Chief Minister. The Minister also informed the ACTA delegation that progress has been made in preparing the rules for introducing the post of professor in the colleges. He also announced during the discussion with the ACTA delegation that 10 marks would be earmarked for interview of the candidates appearing in the tests for appointment of college teachers.

The State Government would soon issue an official notification making it mandatory for the college management committee presidents and principals to sign the papers relating to the financial transaction of their respective colleges, the Minister told the ACTA delegation.

A decision on preparing the required rules for granting leaves to the college teachers was also taken at the meeting the Education Minister had with the ACTA delegation today, said the ACTA statement.

The ACTA delegation was led by its president Dr Khireswar Bora and general secretary Dr Jyotikamal Hazarika. Additional Chief Secretary Rajiv Bora, Commissioner and Secretary Higher Education Hemanga Kishor Sarma were also present in the discussion, among others.
