College students Statewide stir over admission scheme

By STAFF Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 24 - Students from a number of colleges in different parts of the State today took part in the class boycott activity called by the All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO), Assam State committee, demanding rollback of certain preconditions of the State governments free admission scheme for HS and degree students of financially weaker families.

The student organisation is protesting against the denial of free admission to those poor students who do not have 75 per cent and above attendance, or have back in any of their papers in their previous semesters.

At the same time, it is also demanding to extend the benefit of the State governments free admission schemes to the students of venture academic institutions as well.

In Guwahati, students of SB Deorah College, Arya Vidyapeeth College, Pragjyotish College and KRB College took part in the protest action. This apart, the MNC College Nalbari, Goalpara College, Jiadhal College, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur Commerce College, Dhubri Girls College, Darrang College, Luitparia Junior College and several other colleges of the State staged a class boycott activity in support of this demand.

In Guwahati, the students blocked the road near Arya Vidyapeeth College and burned down the copies of the government circular that specified the criterion that students with back in previous semesters cannot get free admission in the next semester.

Similar protests were registered in Majuli, Tezpur, Nalbari, North Lakhimpur, Silchar, Karimganj, Nalbari and Dhubri.

The government should take immediate action to fulfil our three demands and ensure that no student hailing from poor economic background is denied the opportunity to get higher education. If we dont get a positive response from the State government over the issue, a strong, statewide movement would be launched in the future, the organisations State president Jitendra Chaliha said.
