College librarians discuss roles in changing times

GUWAHATI, July 17 - The Assam College Librarians� Association and SB Deorah College jointly organised a day-long State-level workshop on �Role of college librarians of Assam in the changing environment� at SB Deorah College here on Sunday.

The inaugural session was chaired by Prof Narendra Lahkar, president of the Association. In his welcome address, Dr Dhrubajit Das, librarian of SB Deorah College, mentioned the changes in the functioning of libraries of the present era due to fast technological developments, especially the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT), and asked college librarians to adapt to the changing environment as quickly as possible by upgrading their skills.

SB Deorah College Principal Dr Dharmendra Nath, in his keynote address, spoke about the role of the college governing body, highlighting its powers and functions for effective management of the institution. He also spoke about the role and responsibilities of college librarians as ex-officio members of the governing bodies.

ACLA general secretary Dr Prasanta Kumar Deka, speaking on future plans of the Association, stated the contributions made by past office bearers of ACLA and also the future course of action on the various demands of college librarians of Assam.

He also expressed his gratitude to the Assam government for giving academic status and ex-officio governing body membership to college librarians.

In his presidential address, Prof Lahkar recalled the relentless efforts of past eminent members of ACLA in fulfilling the demands of the association. He said that recognition and responsibility were the two sides of a coin and as the college librarians have got their recognition, now they have to shoulder their responsibilities.

In the second session, Prof (retd) PJ Das of Gauhati University delivered a speech on �Managerial and Communication Skills�, where he shared his experiences of management while he was in the university administration department in various capacities such as Registrar in-charge, Director of IDOL, etc.

He explained the various pros and cons of management, and said that good communication skill was very essential in order to be a good manager. An interactive session was also held where the college librarians shared their problems and experiences in the workplace.
