CM vows to protect Lachit�s maidam at Holongapar

JORHAT, Nov 25 - Paying floral tribute at the statue of Lachit Borphukan at his mausoleum (maidam) in Holongapar area of Jorhat on Thursday, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that the State Archaeology department will take proper initiative to protect the site of historical and archaeological importance.

It is perhaps pertinent to mention that for the first time Lachit Divas was celebrated with pomp and gaiety by the State Government at the site of Borphukan�s mausoleum in Holongapar where the body of the brave general of Assam was entombed.

�We the people of Assam will proceed forward with the courage and inspiration of our great general Lahit Borphukan. His love for motherland and utmost dedication for the victory will always inspire the generations in the future too,� said Sonowal.

Stressing the importance of including Lachit Borphukan in the school syllabi, the Chief Minister said that his Government will take adequate measures to include the maidam as a site of archaeological importance to protect it scientifically.

To spread the message of bravery of the great hero among the young generation across the length and breadth of the State, the State Government will take proper initiatives, said the Chief Minister.

Along with Sonowal, Jorhat MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, Jorhat MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami, Teok MLA Renupoma Rajkhowa, Mariyani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, Sonari MLA Tapan Kumar Gogoi, Thaora MLA Kushal Duori and several other dignitaries and government officers also attended the programme at Holongapar.

At Morigaon: Along with the rest of the State, Mahabir Lachit Divas was observed in entire Morigaon district with a daylong programme under the auspices of Morigaon district administration. On the occasion, a unity run was organised which was flagged off by Jayanta Kumar Bora, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Morigaon at Morigaon Bihutoli.

Several programmes were held in five development blocks of Morigaon district. Moreover, in every government high school of the district, Lachit Borphukan memorial meeting was held in the afternoon. The central programme was held at Morigaon Bihutoli where a socio-cultural organisation namely �Sahai� organised a street drama on Lachit Borphukan.

At Dhubri: Lachit Divas was centrally organised by the Dhubri district administration at Dhubri Girls� HS School auditorium where students from various schools and colleges participated along with various other dignitaries.

The programme was graced by Deputy Commissioner, Dhiraj Chaudhary, SP Longeet Terang, Project Director of DRDA Ramen Malakar and Former Principal of BN College Girindranath Goswami. Professor of Assamese Department of BN College who was the main speaker of the event enlightened the gathering with various tales of bravery from the life of Lachit Borphukan. The DC urged the teachers present in the gathering to share the stories of various historical figures like Lachit with their students regularly.

At Sivasagar: Lachit Borphukan, the icon of Assamese chivalry and military tradition, showed us centuries ago that the nation or the country is always above one�s petty self. This is how Narayan Konwar, DC Sivasagar, paid his tribute to the legendary hero while inaugurating the Lachit Divas organised jointly by Sivasagar district administration and Sivasagar Pracin Kirtichinha Sangr�khyan Samity (SPKCSS) at Muktinath Chariali.

Drupad Borgohain, former Rajya Sabha MP presided over the meeting and called upon the people to fight for special category state status under Articles 370 and 371. Dharma Boruah, secretary, SPKCSS, spoke on the objectives while Prema Gogoi and Rekha Moni Bora as the appointed speakers, spoke on the heroics of Lachit Borphukan in the famous naval victory of the Ahom soldiers at Saraigh�t.

Hema Saikia, a differently-abled singer, sang a patriotic song along with the students of Lakshminath Bezbaroa Sishu Bhawan.
