CM urged to release funds for Sonbeel

By Correspondent

KARIMGANJ, April 28 Ratabari MLA Kripanath Malah Kar urged Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to sanction Rs 10 crore initially for improvement of the largest waterbody (beel) Sonbeel under Ratabari constituency in Karimganj district.

It may be mentioned that Sonbeel is one of the largest beel of South Asia. MLA Malah demanded Rs 10 crore from the CM.

In the meantime Prof of Zoology in Assam University, Manabendra Dutta Chaudhury prepared a project report on the development of Sonbeel. The then DC Karimganj Dr M Angamuthu and the then CFO of Karimganj Mahakuma Parishad S Thiyak submitted the project report to the Assam government, which was again forwarded to the Central Rural Ministry for according sanction.

But it is a matter of regret that the Central Rural Ministry is to take action in this regard. On the other hand, the Tourism department of Assam Government has constructed a tourist inspection bungalow at Debdawn near Sonbeel.

Due to drought and erosion, the depth of the beel has now reduced, resulting in problems for the local fishermen and cultivators.

Malah disclosed that to improve Sonbeel, Rs 30 crore will be required. He informed that length and breadth of the beel is 17 km and four km respectively, but in winter season it is reduced to 7 km. The Ratabari MLA also demanded to construct 17 Nachghar for 17 TEs of Rabari constituency and undertake renovation work of all the roads.
