DIBRUGARH, Sept 10 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today took stock of progress of the solid waste management project being constructed at Lekai near here.

The waste management project is being constructed under the Assam Urban Infrastructure Investment Programme involving a financial outlay of Rs 75 crore. The project with an installed capacity of 100 metric tonnes is expected to produce 40 tonnes of biofertilizer as a bi-product.

During his inspection in the site, Sonowal said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a target of making India a clean, green and an ideal country. To reach the target, he said the Government of Assam has taken up steps for setting up solid waste management projects at different places.

The Chief Minister also said 98 urban areas have been identified for setting up the projects. With the scientific management of solid wastes, steps will be taken to generate by-products like bio-fertilizers, diesel and granules to be used for highway construction by using state-of-the-art technologies, he said.

With the solid waste generated in Dibrugarh and its peripheral areas, a target has been set to produce 40 tonnes of bio-fertilizers, said Sonowal.

He also emphasized that there should be adequate infrastructure in place for distributing the bio-fertilizers produced as by-products.

The completion of the project in Dibrugarh will lead to the fulfilment of the long-standing demand of people for scientific solid waste management in the town and its adjoining areas, he added.

MLA Prasanta Phukan and MLA Chakradhar Gogoi, Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha and other functionaries associated with the project were present during the Chief Ministers visit to the site.
