GUWAHATI, July 1 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today stressed the need for massive afforestation across the State to maintain a healthy ecological balance and negate the ill-effects of global warming and climate change.
Taking part in a plantation drive at Gauhati University, the Chief Minister said that it was time to take up a massive plantation drive as a mission and that both the State Government and the citizens must work together towards that end.
The Chief Minister added that forest resources were a key component of the State�s economy and the need was to protect it besides putting it to sustainable use.
On the occasion, the Forest Department also announced that it would launch a plantation drive involving 1.25 lakh saplings over an area of 6,800 hectares. Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma also addressed the gathering.
