GUWAHATI, April 2 � The All Assam Students� Union (AASU) today called upon Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to take a stand in favour of the indigenous people of Assam and support the report prepared by Assam Assembly Speaker Pranab Gogoi on the definition of Assamese people.
The AASU pointed out in a statement today that the Chief Minister had shown a negative attitude towards the report of the Speaker, which is very unfortunate. Since taking over as the Chief Minister, Gogoi has been extending support to the Bangladeshi nationals staying illegally in Assam and till date, no step was taken by him to implement any of the major clauses of the Assam Accord.
The AASU said that though a decision was taken in a tripartite meeting to create a second line of defence, the State government has failed to take any effective step in the last 15 years.
The student body said that the report of the Speaker, which was prepared after detailed discussions with various organisations of the State, would always remain a historic document and all the ethnic groups of the State have extended full support to the same. By opposing the report, the Chief Minister proved once again that he is not interested in the protection of the rights of the indigenous people of Assam and his only interest is the vote bank of Bangladeshi nationals.
Meanwhile, the AGP hailed the step taken by the Speaker of the State Assembly in arriving at a decision on the issue of definition of the Assamese people.
In a statement, AGP president Atul Bora alleged that the Congress and the AIUDF have been resorting to very low level politics for the sake of saving their �vote banks�. He said the step of the Speaker was the right one for safeguarding the political interest of the indigenous people of the State and that both the parties should accept the Speaker�s report on the issue.
