GUWAHATI, Oct 7 � The Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today rejected the All Assam Students� Union�s claim that the project of setting up a world class university in the State was taken due to the student body�s demand for such a university.
In an official statement, the Chief Minister said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had announced this project during his Assam visit on August 26, 2008. �This university is a part of the Prime Minister�s package for overall development of Assam. The State government had already been looking for a suitable place for setting up the university on the outskirts of Guwahati. The contention of the AASU regarding the university is not based on facts,� the statement mentioned.
