CM presents Prag Prerona Awards to 11 woman achievers

GUWAHATI, March 4 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal yesterday presented the third Prag Prerona Award to 11 distinguished women achievers of the State for their contributions in the fields of politics, literature, culture and social life.

The Prag Prerona awardees include Guwahati MP Bijoya Chakravarty, Dr Ajoya Mahanta, actress Runu Devi, senior journalist Sabita Goswami, writer Ranjita Biswas, singer Dhanada Pathak, social worker Sumitra Hazarika, filmmaker Dr Santwana Bordoloi, former AIR news reader Lili Das Malik, environmentalist Purnima Devi Barman and Arjuna awardee Monalisa Baruah Mehta.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister underlined the multifaceted role played by women and also their contributions in taking the society forward. He emphasised the importance of educating the girl child and empowerment of women.

Stating that government initiatives like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhau are aimed at ensuring security of the girl child and giving them equal platform for nurturing their talents, he also emphasised sensitising the people about gender equality and urged the society to play an active role in giving women ample opportunities for their growth.

Sonowal mentioned that the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is aspiring to build an India where women are secured, empowered and equal partners for development. Sonowal also called for skilling the womenfolk and asked them to take advantage of the Skill Development Centres set up by the government in different parts of the State.

Singer Usha Uthup, Prag News CMD Sanjib Narayan and Editor-in-Chief Ajit Kumar Bhuyan among others were present in the programme.
