CM opens Dr Hazarika�s samadhikshetra

GUWAHATI, Nov 5 - Music lovers, young and old alike, rose to the occasion as millions paid homage to legendary singer-composer Dr Bhupen Hazarika�across the length and breadth of the State on his fourth death anniversary today.

Activities marking the occasion started early this morning and continued till late night with people, irrespective of caste, creed and status, thronging venues decked up for the occasion in all the districts.

In Guwahati, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi inaugurated the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Samadhikshetra (memorial) located at Jalukbari and also unveiled the specially designed life-size statue of the maestro, inside the campus.

The Asam Sahitya Sabha also organised �Samanwayor Divas� in the Gauhati University playground this morning to commemorate the death anniversary of the �Bard of Brahmaputra� where more than 10,000 singers who converged from across the State sang Jilikabo Luitore Paar in unison � one of the immortal creations by the music maestro.��

Speaking at the function organised in the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Memorial campus, Gogoi offered his tributes to Dr Hazarika, stating that it is through the life and works of the legendary musician that the Assamese society could be promoted in the world milieu.

�For the Assamese society, Dr Bhupen Hazarika�s works will fetch what Rabindranath Tagore�s works did for the Bengali society. We would take all necessary steps to preserve and promote the legend�s work across the globe as they reflect the mindset of our society,� Gogoi said.����

�Dr Bhupen Hazarika was more than just a musician. He was a humanist, a progressive thinker and a revolutionary leader. Both Brahmaputra and Bhupen Hazarika will remain the lifeline of the Assamese society,� Gogoi opined.

The Chief Minister while addressing the gathering announced that the State Government would allocate Rs 10 crore to preserve and promote Dr Hazarika�s work across the country.

�I have spoken to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal so that a statue of Dr Hazarika could be installed in the capital. There are also plans involving Columbia University from where Bhupen-�da� received his doctorate degree,� Gogoi said.

He assured that the memorial would be further developed with additions of an archive and a museum so that it can emerge as a preferred destination for those who desire to know about the life and works of Dr Hazarika.

The inauguration ceremony was also attended by noted singer and sister of Dr Hazarika, Sudakshina Sarma, Cultural Affairs Minister Bismita Gogoi, PWD Minister Ajanta Neog, Irrigation Minister Chandan Sarkar and Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University Dr Mridul Hazarika, besides a host of other noted personalities and family members of Dr Bhupen Hazarika.��

The All Assam Students� Union too observed the occasion in the customary fashion at Dighalipukhuripaar and people from various walks of life gathered to pay floral tributes to the legend.
