GUWAHATI, May 19 � Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi yesterday unveiled the Assam State War Memorial and participated in a meeting of the 23rd Rajya Sainik Board at his official residence in Koinadhara.
The war memorial will be constructed on the North Bank of Dighalipukhuri to honour the martyrs, said an official statement.
The monument will depict the famous battle of Saraighat. The monument has been designed to blend in with the overall beautification plan of the Dighalipukhuri.
The project cost would be around Rs 7.5 crore. Three panels would depict the period of World Wars, recent wars and the Mughal period. It is expected that the site will be a landmark and an important tourist spot of the city.
During the meeting held on the occasion, Commodore (Retd) Kamalesh Chandra Choudhury, Director, Sainik Welfare, government of Assam and Secretary, Rajya Sainik Board, gave a presentation highlighting the achievements for the period 2010-2014.
The Director stated that the government of Assam has set up grievance redressal mechanism for the defence personnel under the respective Deputy Commissioners in every district headquarter.
The meeting was attended by MLA Robin Bordoloi, Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla, GOC 101 Area Lieutenant General SP Nawathe and other senior officials from the Army and civil administration.
