CM lays foundation of new flyover

GUWAHATI, March 6 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today laid the foundation stone of a new flyover connecting the RG Baruah Road with the Bishnu Rabha Flyover at Ganeshguri Chariali.

The PWD has taken up the construction of the 476-metre flyover under the State Own Priority Scheme-General (SOPD-G), 2018-19, with a financial outlay of Rs 58.76 crore.

Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal said the new initiative would significantly help in easing traffic congestion at Ganeshguri, one of the busiest commercial junctions of the city.

�The State government aims at transforming Guwahati as the gateway to the South East Asian countries. Keeping this in mind, the State Capital Region has been notified, apart from implementation of various development projects, to develop Guwahati as a Smart City and to improve livelihood standards of its residents,� he said.

Stating that tourist footfall has significantly gone up in the State as a result of government initiatives, the Chief Minister also urged the people to maintain the standard of hospitality which the State is known for.

State PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that once completed, the new arm of the flyover would facilitate smooth traffic movement directly from the RGB Road to Khanapara and from Ulubari to the RGB Road.

Stating that traffic congestion would reduce by 35 per cent as a result of the new flyover, Sarma informed that the estimated period of completion of the project is 18 months.

He also said that the PWD has already mooted plans for construction of flyovers connecting Ganesh Mandir to Ganeshguri and at the GNRC point.

Guwahati MP Bijoya Chakravarty, Dispur MLA Atul Bora, CEM of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Tuliram Ronghang, Commissioner & Secretary of PWD Rajesh Kemprai, along with a host of other dignitaries, were present on the occasion.
