CM lays base for multipurpose flood shelter in Lakhimpur

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Oct 30 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today laid the foundation stone of a multipurpose flood shelter in Lakhimpur district.

He inaugurated the construction work at Banhgora-Dhunaguri under Bihpuria Revenue Circle. Planned and developed by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority at a cost of Rs 2.51 crore, the facility will provide shelter to both the affected population and cattle during floods.

The two-storeyed RCC structure will be used to host various socio-cultural and public programmes during the dry season.

Sonowal said that his government has distributed one lakh land pattas and would distribute another one lakh in the coming days. The facility will also have uninterrupted power supply with a generator set and solar panels. Laying the foundation stone, Sonowal asked the local youth, women and senior citizens to monitor the construction work of the flood shelter to ensure quality control. He also informed the public that a project worth Rs 10.5 crore has been taken up for erosion control at Jamugurighat, Dhalpur.

The Chief Minister was accompanied by P&RD Minister Naba Kumar Doley, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan, local MLA Debananda Hazarika and Tezpur MP Pallab Lochan Das.

Sonowal also chaired a review meeting with all heads of departments of Lakhimpur district at the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner at North Lakhimpur this morning. Sonowal mooted the idea of conducting a hydrological survey of the Subansiri river and asked the concerned departments to find a permanent solution to the flood and erosion problem.

The Chief Minister also took stock of the COVID-19 situation in the district and directed all the departments to monitor the developmental works and implementation of various schemes.

During the meeting, Sonowal also reviewed the progress of allotment of land pattas, Prime Minister�s Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, AADHAR registration, Saubhagya scheme, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana in the district.

After giving allotment papers to 9,400 landless indigenous people, Sonowal asked Lakhimpur DC Dr Jiban B to clear the decks for the allotment of land pattas to another seven thousand beneficiaries by December this year.

Expressing satisfaction over completion of construction of 96 per cent work for building 16,930 shelters homes under PMAY (Grameen), Sonowal asked the DC to ensure quality of construction of the dwelling houses under the scheme.

On the under-construction Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital, he said that once completed and dedicated, the hospital would cater to the healthcare needs of the people of the north bank of the Brahmaputra. He also asked the hospital authority to maintain greenery in the campus.
