CM launches website of Majuli Cultural varsity

JORHAT, Nov 28 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who arrived in his constituency Majuli on a four-day tour yesterday, officially launched the website of Majuli Cultural University in the Brahmaputra river island district on Friday evening. The website www.muoc. ac.in would serve as a platform for disseminating information about the different courses and other related information of the university to students and visitors to the Brahmaputra river island.

A Majuli district administration official told this newspaper that Sonowal, while speaking at a function organised on the ocassion in the conference hall of the Majuli Deputy Commissioner�s office at Garamur, said the university, expected to grow as a multi-disciplinary higher educational institution with specialisation in studies and research on culture, should play an active role in culturally unifying the greater Assamese society while strengthening the socio-cultural foundation of the state.

Hoping that the cultural varsity would be able to provide an opportunity for the youths to study the varied colourful cultural heritage of Assam in a systematic way, the Chief Minister called for the university contributing towards creation of a culture industry in the State so that the students could learn to manage cultural institutions professionally, the official stated.

Sonowal emphasised the need for carrying out research work on folklores, traditional lifestyles of the indigenous communities of Assam to prepare the syllabuses of the courses so that the university could become a model for other countries on harmonious cultural co-existence.

He also said about the objective of making the university a tourist attraction in spiritually rich and biodiversity hotspot Majuli with eco-friendly architecture. The Chief Minister announced that the teaching posts of the varsity would soon be sanctioned, the official informed.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Dr Dambarudhar Nath, in his address stated that courses on audio-visual arts, literature, social science, language and linguistics, yoga, Indian traditional medicines, religious studies and comparative analysis etc., would be imparted by the university from 2021.

The Chief Minister was informed by the university authorities that the UGC had authorised the varsity to award degrees.

The cultural university would start its classes temporarily at Pub Majuli College till the infrastructure of the higher educational institution at the 100-bigha land campus provided at the riverside near Garamur comes up, the official said.

The Satradhikar of Uttar Kamalabari Satra of Majuli, Janardan Debagoswami, Secretary of Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, Sudarshan Thakur, Majuli Deputy Commissioner, Bikram Kairi, were among those present on the occasion, among other dignitaries.
