DOOMDOOMA, July 31 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today visited Sadiya in Tinsukia district and inspected the erosion-hit area of Sadiya 8th Mile where the erosion caused by the Kundil river has taken a serious turn, posing a threat to the very existence of the National Highway-37, as a portion of the highway is about to be breached at 8th Mile.
He also took stock of the ongoing erosion control works at the site.
Later, talking to local mediapersons, Sonowal said, �If we had not taken some immediate measures to check the land erosion caused by the Kundil river here, the surface communication with Sadiya and two districts of Arunachal Pradesh would have been cut off. I am happy that we, in cooperation with the local people, have become successful in protecting the road temporarily.�
�Our government in collaboration with the Narendra Modi-led Union government will take all possible measures to solve the flood and erosion problems of the State in the coming days,� Sonowal added.
He thanked the Prime Minister for creating the North East Water Management Authority with the Deputy Chairman of NITI Ayog as its chairman and members from the northeastern States to prepare project reports on flood and erosion problem in the region.
During his visit, the Chief Minister was accompanied by the Minister of State for Labour and Tea Tribes Welfare Sanjay Kishan, Sadiya MLA Bolin Chetia, Digboi MLA Suren Phukan, Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma, Chabua MLA Binod Hazarika and others.
On the other hand, the Sadiya units of AJYCP, TAYPA, ATASU, ATTSA and a few other organisations expressed strong resentment as the Chief Minister did not speak anything about the package that he announced earlier for a permanent solution to the flood and erosion problem in Sadiya.
