CM hails Daimarys truce offer

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, Jan 6 Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that Ranjan Daimary factions recent offer for a unilateral ceasefire with government is a major breakthrough.

The Chief Minister has formally conveyed the Bodo militant outfits offer to sit for dialogue to the Centre. Daimarys group, which is responsible for most of the recent incidents of violence in the State, has handed over a letter to the Chief Minister proposing to join the peace process.

Daimary has also offered a unilateral ceasefire offer, which is a major achievement for the State Government, he said.

NDFB anti-talk factions letter was discussed with the Prime Minister yesterday and a strategy was firmed up to start political dialogue with the outfit, he added.

The letter had come earlier, but I kept it under wraps because we were observing the activities of the outfit to gauge its mood, he said.

The Chief Minister, who met Congress president Sonia Gandhi, this morning, briefed her about the prevailing political situation and the development measures taken up by the State Government. He invited Gandhi to visit Assam.

The Congress president is likely to visit next month, he told this newspaper.

Gogois however dismissed the Oppositions campaign against the Congress Government on N C Hills financial scam, reiterating that it was he who took the initiative in 2008 by asking the CAG to conduct special inspection and later handed over the case to CBI for further probe.

By raking up the issue of corruption in North Cachar Hills, the Opposition seems to indirectly given certificate to my government because it implies that only North Cachar Hills was hit by corruption, while rest of State was corruption-free, he said.

In N C Hills, the State Government has little role to play, because it is directly administered by the Governor, he said.

I have no role to play in NC Hills, he said.

Meanwhile, the ruling Congress Partys election committee is likely to be constituted soon, though office bearers may have to wait until the Assembly election is over for appointment.

This was revealed by the Chief Minister after his meeting with Congress president today.
