CM hails contributions of Christian missionaries

GUWAHATI, March 2 � Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi recently appreciated the work of Christian missionaries in�North East India and thanked the Church which he said was rendering yeomen�s services through its various institutions.

Addressing the Indian bishops who gathered at Don Bosco Institute in Guwahati for their 29th general body meeting from February 24 to March 3, the Chief Minister said, Assam is privileged to host Bishops �from all over India who are dedicated and committed to the cause of humanity through their institutions in the fields of education, health and social welfare,� a press release stated.�

Gogoi credited peace and harmony in his State to the blessings of God that he received through�the heads of various religions. He said that�Assam was on its way to progress and the State was much indebted to the Church that was contributing immensely for the growth of people, especially, the youth.

Cardinal Oswald Gracias, vice-president of CBCI and Archbishop of Mumbai, speaking on behalf of 163 Bishops present, expressed his sincere appreciation and thanks to the large gathering of almost 5,000 people of North East for offering special hospitality to the heads of the Catholic Church. He said, �North East is a paradise on earth. �It is a beautiful place with lots of cultural variety. Although we could not visit all the seven sister States of North East, through the cultural evening organised on the occasion �the seven sister States of North East came to us�.

Cardinal Telesphore Toppo of Ranchi released In His Foot Steps, a 200-page book specially prepared for the occasion highlighting the contribution of Christian Missionaries in North East India.
