CM flays Centre for silence on influx issue

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 28 The State government today came out against the Centres decision to ease visa norms for Bangladeshi nationals under the age of 13 and above 65 years and give them multiple entry visa for five years.

We have opposed this relaxation, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters here.

He also castigated the Centre for not taking up the issue of illegal immigrants during the meetings between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Bangladeshi leaders in Dhaka during the ministers visit to the neighbouring country earlier this week.

Illegal immigration was the number one issue for them (BJP). So what happened? Have all illegal immigrants left Assam since May 17 that now the issue has become irrelevant for them? When you are in politics you must maintain some consistency, Gogoi said.

Regarding the decision of the BPF to sever its alliance with the Congress, Gogoi said he has received the resignation of Transport and Tourism Minister Chandan Brahma and it will be forwarded to the Governor.
