GUWAHATI, March 30 � In a bid to infuse more mobility in the city bus services, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi flagged off 61 city buses to raise the number of Government buses on the roads of the city and its adjoining areas at a function held at the Rupnath Brahma Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) here today. The 11 air-conditioned (AC) and 50 non-AC buses under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) Phase-II are the special purpose vehicles and they would ply between Jalukbari-Noonmati, Jalukbari-Beltola via Paltanbazar, ISBT-Mirza and ISBT-Jagiroad routes, said an official press release here.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that in order to put the State into a robust course of growth, its transport system needs to be revolutionised and since 2001 the State Government under his stewardship has been giving a lot of importance to this sector.
He further said that the State Government has been providing more buses for the service of the people as approximately 10 lakh people of the State, on a daily basis, use road transport as a means of communication. He further reiterated his government�s commitment to improve transport system of the State by stimulating adequate Government intervention in road and water transport.
Assam Transport Minister Ajit Singh while speaking on the occasion underlined the Government�s objective of revamping the Transport Department which has the potential of boosting the growth of the State.
Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla, Chairman, Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) GC Langthasa, Additional Chief Secretary, Power VB Pyarelal, Additional Chief Secretary, Transport VS Bhaskar, were present at the function, among others.
