CM fixes April 30 deadline for dyke repair

GUWAHATI, March 28 - Taking strong note of the delayed progress of repairing works of embankments in the State, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal warned all responsible officers of water resources department of dire consequences in the eventuality of failure to complete the works in time. He set April 30, as the new deadline to complete all the embankment strengthening and repair-related works, said an official press release.

It needs mention here that the Chief Minister had earlier set March 31 as the deadline for completing.

The press release said while reviewing the progress of embankment repairing works here today, the Chief Minister said that a record amount of Rs 347.67 crore had been released under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for carrying out the strengthening and repairing of embankments and erosion protection works.

Underlining the urgent need for developing a competitive temperament amongst the Government departments, the Chief Minister said that the Water Resources Department should strive hard to dispel its negative image. He also asked the Department to show resolve to execute quality work and bring about a visible change.

Referring to the discussion he had with the Brahmaputra Board Chairman in New Delhi recently, the Chief Minister laid stress on the need to strengthen the working relations between the Board and the Water Resources Department.

Stating further that lack of quality construction firms and quality contractors is adversely impacting the implementation of construction projects in Assam, the Chief Minister advised the Water Resources Department to take necessary steps for registering motivated entrepreneurs and develop their construction skills, manpower management etc.
