CM directive on Dr Bhupen Hazarika Samannay Kshetra

GUWAHATI, June 7 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said that the proposed Dr Bhupen Hazarika Samannay Kshetra to be built at Zero Point, Saikhowa beside the Dhola-Sadiya bridge should showcase the harmonious co-existence of different communities along with their traditional and cultural heritage for strengthening the rich cultural bond of the State.

Chairing a meeting to discuss the modalities of the Samannay Kshetra as per the budgetary promise of the State government here today, Sonowal said the proposed project would reflect the legendary singer�s sense of communal amity, universal brotherhood, humanity and universal justice. Efforts will also be taken to showcase the social harmony among different communities of Assam, he added.

The Chief Minister said that the whole objective behind conceiving of the idea of constructing the Samannay Kshetra is to showcase different aspects of traditions, cultural heritage and life-style of all the communities of Assam in an interesting and meaningful way.

Sonowal also advocated making a dedicated managing society incorporating representatives and experts from all the communities and ethnicities of the State so that the project when completed becomes a miniature Assam.

The Samannay Kshetra, which will be built on a sprawling plot of land measuring 400 bighas, will have a statue of Dr Bhupen Hazarika at the main gate, besides a series of murals on the culture of various communities of Assam dotting the site. A series of typical villages of different communities will also be created, moving through which the visitors will get the taste of real Assam.

Sonowal asked the authority concerned to keep the central portion of the Samannay Kshetra as an open ground where different social and cultural activities, and fairs may be organized. He also asked the State tourism and cultural affairs department to make the proposed Samannay Kshetra a cultural hotspot and a centre of tourism potential so that people from across the world come and visit the site.

The Chief Minister also asked Principal Secretary (Finance) Samir Sinha to make provision of adequate financial resources so that fund crunch does not become a roadblock for the project.
