CM assures economic council for Manipuris

SILCHAR, July 25 � A delegation led by Manipuri Diaspora, Assam (an apex Manipuri organisation) and other State-level organisations met the Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, and submitted a reminder memorandum for an Economic Development Council for Manipuri speaking community living in Assam.

The delegation was headed by L Gourababu Singh, vice-president Manipuri Diaspora Assam, Dr M Santi Kumar Singha, general secretary, Manipuri Diaspora, Assam, Jayanti Devi, president, All Assam Manipuri Women Meira Paibi Coordination Committee, Ningamba Singha, vice-president, All Assam Manipuri Students� Union, Kamini Singha secretary Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Assam, Babudhan Singha, secretary Thougal Marup, Surjeet Singh Meitei Convention, women leaders, Prova Devi and Moiranglei Devi, and youth leader Ranbir (Bikas) Singh.

Moreover, Dinesh Prasad Goala, minister Urban & Housing Development, Ajit Singh, Parliamentary secretary Finance, Kutub Ahmed Mazumder, MLA Sonai took a leading role in arranging the appointment and discussion on the demand with the Chief Minister. These leaders withBithika Dev, MLA, Silchar jointly submitted a separate memorandum demanding an Economic Development Council for Manipuri-speaking people in Assam. Members of United Manipuri Association (UMMA), Jiten Singha, Kunja Mohan Singha and Dijen Singha who were at a sit-in demonstration at Last Gate demanding the same Council were also present in the delegation.

The delegation also met Dr. Bhumidhar Barman chairman of the Cabinet Sub Committee on the Economic Development Council and submitted a copy of the memorandum to him. He also assured for taking necessary steps for speedy consideration of the same.

It is worth mentioning here that, the Chief Minister had already given assurance for constitution of a separate Economic Development Council for Manipuri speaking people living in Assam in response to the memorandum submitted by the aforesaid organisations during last Assembly session on March 31 at his office chamber at Dispur with all the leaders of Barak Valley.

The delegation was assured by the Chief Minister that the demand will be fulfilled before the coming election and it will be declared during the winter session. Dinesh Prasad Goala, Ajit Singh and Kutub Ahmed requested the Chief Minister to fulfill the demand as early as possible. Dr M Santi Kumar Singha, general secretary, Manipuri Diaspora Assam expressed gratitude and thanks to Dinesh Prasad Goala, Ajit Singh and Kutub Ahmed Mazumder for their relentless support to the demand raised by this linguistically minority and deprived community.
