CM asks NHPC to study impact

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 18 Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has suggested the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) to constitute a multi-disciplinary expert committee to study all the issues connected with the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project (LSHEP) thoroughly and initiate suitable follow-up actions accordingly.

According to an official press release here, the Chief Minister had a meeting with the Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) S K Garg yesterday at the former's official residence here on the vital issues concerning the LSHEP.

The Chief Minister told the NHPC chief that in view of the resentment among the members of the public on the downstream impact of the mega-dam project on biodiversity and environment as a whole, the NHPC should take care of all the issues. The power company should address all these issues properly leaving no scope for any resentment from any quarter, the Chief Minister told the NHPC chief.

"The dam must not pose any threat to the environment and all steps must be initiated to protect the environment, including the rich biodiversity of the State," the Chief Minister said categorically.

He also asked the NHPC chief to keep on apprising the State Government from time to time of the steps initiated by the power company on the LSHEP, said the press release.
