JORHAT, Dec 3 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today urged people to vote for BJP in the panchayat polls to boost the anti-corruption drive undertaken by his government and cleanse the panchayats from corruption that was rampant during the Congress rule.
Sonowal said this while speaking in a poll campaign meeting at Uhagora village under Ghiladhari Police Station in Golaghat district.
He urged the people to bring the panchayat administration under BJP to enable the government to fast-track development at the grassroots by rooting out corruption from the system and contributing to the �journey of real development� initiated by his government.
Sonowal promised of extending the BJP's policy of good governance initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the grassroots and bring in real development and empowerment at the grassroots.
Taking potshots at the Congress, Sonowal said the party patronised corruption and failed badly on the development front with the same missing on the ground.
The Chief Minister while stating about the zero tolerance policy adopted by his government against the corrupt officials and staff by putting many behind bars, said that it was time to send Congressmen packing home from panchayats and strengthen the government�s initiative to provide clean and good governance.
Jayanta Malla Baruah lambasts AGP, Cong: Meanwhile, Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) Chairman Jayanta Malla Baruah while addressing mediapersons in Jorhat late in the afternoon today, slammed alliance partner AGP, Congress, AIUDF and all organisations that were opposing the Citizenship (Ammendment) Bill,2016.
Baruah responding to AGP�s criticism of the BJP and opposing the Bill, said that the party (AGP) only talked of regionalism, but in practice was not the case. Baruah alleged that the AGP was �power-hungry� and was in cahoots with Congress and other organisations that were not really interested in the State�s development and progress.
Mocking the AGP, the BJP leader said that AGP was wearing the shirt of regionalism, having buttons of Congress with thread and stitches of AGP�s selfish leaders.
Targetting the Congress party, he alleged that the party has become a party of illegal Bangladeshi Muslim migrants while AIUDF was a party having Jihadi supporters who have a design to make Assam an Islamic State.
Slamming the organisations opposing the Bill by staging protest on the streets, Baruah alleged the organisations were funded by elements that wanted to destabilise the government and were working at the behest of such elements.
The spokesman said that the Bill to become a law was a long-drawn process and asked those opposing the Bill to wait now.
�After passing of the Bill if it is found to be having something not in the interest of Assam then anyone like our current Chief Minister did in case repealing IM(DT) Act, could approach the doors of Supreme Court,� Baruah said.
He said the protests were sending a wrong signal and could create a negative image of the State and hamper the tourism industry with the season having just begun. Replying to a query by this correspondent whether AASU, which too was opposing the Bill vehemently, was working at behest of some other elements, Baruah said as a paranoia was created by other protesting organisations by spreading a wrong perception of a fear that a large number of Hindus from Bangladesh will be brought to Assam with the passing of the Bill, AASU too has got influenced by that idea. AASU too has joined the protest thinking Assam�s future would be hampered, Baruah added.
