GUWAHATI, March 26 - People had to face major inconvenience on Thursday after many groceries of the city remain closed despite being given exemption from the lockdown.
The city had witnessed panic buying before the announcement of the lockdown. However, many people refrained from buying things in bulk following assurance from the administration that the sale of essential items like grocery, vegetables, medicines, fuel and dairy products will continue.
In my area there are seven to eight grocery shops. None of them was open today for reasons best known to them. With the government disallowing plying of vehicles, I will have to walk a long distance to find a grocery shop. This has caused immense inconvenience, a resident of Public Health in Hengrabari said.
The government should ensure that all groceries remain open and the supply chain not hampered, he added.
Another resident said that he travelled the entire stretch of RG Baruah Road and yet could not find a grocery shop.
How far shall I have to go looking for a shop? It is surprising that at such a critical time, the traders are playing hide-and-seek! he exclaimed.
Many residents wanted the Kamrup Metro administration to issue instructions to grocery owners to keep their shops open during the stipulated time.
Some traders, on the other hand, have complained that the supplies of commodities like potatoes and onions were not smooth at all, which prompted them to keep their shutters down.
