Climate resilient rice variety released

IMPHAL, March 5 - A climate resilient rice variety was released at a two-day National seminar on �Integrating agri-horticultural and allied research for food and nutritional security in the era of global climate disruption� here on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh called upon the participants particularly the scientists coming from various parts of the country to think seriously and work to produce more foodgrains for the betterment of the society and the country.

�This is the right time to think seriously on how to produce more foodgrains so that the economy of the nation grows, which will ultimately lead to prosperity in the region,� Ibobi said at the seminar organised by Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) Research Complex for NE Hill region.

Speakers in the seminar expressed the need to have an in depth discussion about prospects, constraints, strategies and recent scientific advances in the field of climate resilient agri-horticultural production system and allied sectors in NE and country. A climate resilient rice variety called RCM-30 (RC Maniphou-13) was released during the function along with a souvenir.

Dr KK Jindal, former additional director general (Horticulture) of ICAR highlighted the prospects of Kiwi fruit cultivation in NE. The seminar, attended by around 200 scientists, is focusing on farming systems approach and conservation agriculture for ensuring sustainability and food security in agriculture.
