Climate protest in city tomorrow

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Nov 27 - Fridays for Future, a movement for climate justice, will hold a protest demonstration on the bank of Dighalipukhuri here on Friday, demanding immediate action from the government to protect the environment.

Over 500 participants will join the protest. The demonstration, which is a part of the global climate strike inspired by Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, will be held from 2 pm.

The government should support the movement and call upon all the policy makers, stakeholders, civil servants, private and government bodies to firmly stand together acknowledging the fact that climate change is happening now and actions must not to be delayed further. It is not an individual or a groups fight, it is the fight to save our home and we need one and all in this fight, Shivani Goyal, an organising member, said.

Declaration of climate emergency has been one of the most important demands of the time and the government should keep the issue at the centre and take stern action to make things go in favour of the environment for a better and sustainable living for all the existing and upcoming generations, she added.

The protesters, most of them are young and students, urged the government to not to cut off trees while constructing the bridge between Guwahati city and North Guwahati. Alternative sustainable ways of construction have to be brought up for building bridges without going for deforestation.

Another protester, Bidisha Ghoshal said, The policy makers, world leaders and the government must give utmost priority to making some changes in the system by declaring climate emergency.
