Cleanliness drive in Basistha area

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 1 A cleanliness drive was undertaken today at Basistha and its surrounding area by Abhijatri, a woman welfare organisation.

The local residents came out to keep their locality clean and the joint effort of the citizens and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) ensured that the area that is a tourist attraction, got rid of its filth.

According to Kalpana Borah, a functionary of Abhijatri, this effort has to be continued to get more footfall of tourists. The citizens showed great enthusiasm to clean the area and we are optimistic that this interest will be sustained, said the functionary. The cleanliness drive covered the area around Basistha temple, the rivulet and the hillside.

Borah further said that the authorities concerned should take steps to dredge the rivulet where silt is depositing at an alarming rate and restriction should be imposed on picnic parties. Picnic parties make the area dirty by throwing plastic plates, glasses, polythene etc., said Borah, regretting that some people are least bothered about their environment.
