GUWAHATI, Feb 1 � Aaranyak, an society for Nature conservation, today launched an initiative named �Mission Clean Brahmaputra� aimed at keeping the river Brahmaputra � the lifeline of Assam � clean for securing a better habitat for aquatic lives and also for ensuring its sustainable use for the people of the State.
More than 250 students from 12 different educational institutes took part in the cleaning of the river and its banks and islands in and around Guwahati today.
As part of this mission, different priority riverside areas of the Brahmaputra will be cleaned and the communities will be made aware to maintain the cleanliness. Aaranyak will endeavour to reach out to the local communities and other stakeholders in order to ensure their active participation.
This mission was formally inaugurated at the Uzanbazar Ghat at 9 am today.
Vice Chancellor of the Dibrugarh University, Dr Alak Kumar Buragohain, inaugurated in the mission. Artiste Manas Robin and other distinguished guests also participated in the programme.
Dr Abdul Wakid, Project Head of Mission Clean Brahmaputra, said, �We are greatly encouraged to get such enthusiastic participation from different institutes, organizations and individuals. We hope to get such mass participation in other targeted sites of the Brahmaputra as well.�
As a follow-up of the launching programme, similar river cleaning activities will be conducted in another 30 areas of the Brahmaputra. The drive is already receiving support from various government and non-government institutes, individuals and celebrities of Assam.
