GUWAHATI, Sept 16 - The Union government�s response in Parliament over the report of the High Level Committee on the implementation of Clause Six of the Assam Accord has evoked sharp reactions in Assam.
�The questions posed in Parliament by Sambhaji Chatrapati, nominated member to the Rajya Sabha, on the status of the Clause 6 implementation committee and the answer given by the Union Home Ministry demonstrate the perpetration of a fraud on the people of Assam on the issue of protecting their identity,� alleged senior advocate and convener of Prabrajan Virodhi Manch Upamanyu Hazarika.�
Chatrapati sought to know whether the recommendations of the committee have been submitted to the Central government, the nature of the recommendations, the amount of time the government is likely to take to examine the recommendation and the timeline for implementation of the recommendation, but the questions were answered with a bland assertion that the report has been submitted to the Assam government, which is studying its recommendations, Hazarika added.�
Expressing astonishment at the fact that even though the report was submitted to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in February, it is yet to reach the Central government, Hazarika also questioned the intention of both the governments.
�It did not require the Central government to constitute a committee of this nature before bringing in the Citizenship Amendment Act � a legislation that was brought to protect foreigners. For indigenous people, who are on their way to becoming a minority under Bangladeshi influx, it only comprises empty and broken promises,� he added.
