JORHAT, Sept 5 � Classes in the newly-established Assam Women�s University (AWU) here is going to start from September 10 next.
Classes for the first academic session will initially include graduate and post-graduate courses on various subjects like Travel and Tourism, Mass Communication, Business Management, Information and Computer Science, Cultural Studies and Fine Arts, Fashion Design and Technology, English and Psychology, exclusively for the female students.
As the officials concerned of Assam Agricultural University (AAU) were entrusted with the job of conducting the admission and recruitment of teaching staff at the initial stage, both the admission and recruitment of 16 assistant professors (on ad-hoc basis) was completed some days ago.
�In all, 50 students took admission in different post-graduate courses, while 15 students enrolled their names for the undergraduate courses. The selected teachers also joined their new assignments. Classes are scheduled to start from September 10,� said Dr Ranjit Kumar Saud, spokesperson of Assam Agricultural University (AAU).
The Vice-Chancellor of AAU, Dr KM Bujarbaruah has been authorised to look after the entire matters of AWU till the appointment of the first vice-chancellor of the women�s university, while the responsibility of the chancellor has been bestowed upon Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi as per the concerned Act of the university.
It has been resolved to start classes for the first session at the old campus of the Grain Storage Research Institute of AAU in Rowriah here as the Government is yet to allot land for building a permanent campus of the university in Jorhat. Officials concerned said that the State Government has sanctioned a sum of Rs1.5 crore to start the initial works, while discussion is on at the higher level for further grants and allotment.
