City to host sports climbing meet

GUWAHATI, Oct 26 � The Assam Rock and Sports Climbing Association (ARSCA) will conduct the 16th North East Zonal Sport Climbing Championship, under the aegis of Indian Mountaineering Foundation, here from October 30. It is for the second time that the organisation is hosting this championship.

Disclosing about the three-day meet, Everester Manish Kumar Deka, who is also a member of the organising committee, said in a press conference today that about 100 competitors from eight States of the region will show their skill. The North East Zonal Sport Climbing of Indian Mountaineering Foundation will also support the State body in organising the meet which will be held at the 4th Assam Police Battalion campus at Kahilipara, here. The inauguration ceremony will take place at 9 am on October 30, informed Deka. Competitions will be conducted in the sub junior and junior categories for both boys and girls and in open group for men and women. There will be three events in the competition-Speed, Lead and Bouldering for all the categories. The winners of this competition will take part in the National Sport Climbing Competition to be held at Kolkata in December, who will represent the North east Zone.

Deka and Tarun Saikia, the first Assamese Everester also explained about their experiences of scaling the Mt Cho-Oyu (8201 metre) and Mt Thing Chin Khang (6010 metre). Manish scaled the Mt Cho-Oyu peak at Tibet Himalayas on September 29 while Tarun led a team to reach the Mt Thing Chin Khang on October 11.
