City to host MMA fights tomorrow

GUWAHATI, March 3 - Guwahatians for the first time will witness Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fights as the TransV�s Bidang Fight League will be held at the Bhogeswari Phukanani Indoor Stadium on Sunday. The event will start at 4 pm.

Giving details about the championship, CEO of the organising body, AK Mahanta said in a press conference here today that MMA is a combination of kung fu, karate, boxing, judo and wrestling which helps in building self confidence, physical and mental strength of sportspersons.

The adviser of the organising body, Diganta Barman said that the sport is immensely popular in South East Asia. He further revealed that the All India Mixed Martial Arts Association will provide technical support to this championship where competitions will be held in professional and amateur categories. He informed that the Lao PDR Ambassador Southam Sakonhninhom will be present during the day-long championship.

Professional MMA fighter and owner of the Bidang Gym, Bhabajeet Choudhury said that fighters from countries like USA, UK, Laos, Thailand apart from India will be seen in action. Altogether 10 fighters in professional group and 16 in amateur category will contest for titles in different weight categories. Altogether seven fighters from Assam � Manas Daimary, Manas Das, Ritesh Paswan, Bulbul Bora, Santanu Baruah, Dhrubajyoti Deka, Rupjyoti Choudhury will contest in the championship, Bhabajeet said.
