City scribe sentenced for defaming minister

GUWAHATI, March 28 - Acting on a defamation case filed by Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Court of Judicial Magistrate of Kamrup (M) has sentenced simple imprisonment for a period of one month and fine of Rs 5,000 to city-based scribe Bikash Sarma.

This was stated by Debajit Saikia, advocate, on behalf of Himanta Biswa Sarma at a press conference today.

The case was filed by Sarma in 2010 against the publisher, the editor and the associate editor of an English newspaper published from Guwahati, along with peasant leader Akhil Gogoi. Sarma moved the court after the newspaper published a news item based on a press meet addressed by Gogoi.
