GUWAHATI, Aug 14 City Police is contemplating to seek cooperation from various schools located in the heart of Guwahati to ease traffic congestion.
Superintendant of Police (City Traffic) Amanjeet Kaur informed that she would take up the matter with the heads of the institutions so that they can either have their own parking space or make school buses compulsory for the students.
Kaur said vehicular traffic movement virtually comes to a standstill in a number of busy roads in Guwahati, especially after the school hours, due to heavy rush of traffic.
The Guwahati Club Ambari-TC School point and the Panbazar intersection are two of the most congested points, she said, adding that the authorities would be moved to see whether anything can be done about it.
It is certainly a problem we need to address. But the real problem lies with the attitude of the people, especially when it comes to obeying basic traffic rules. Peoples apathy towards fellow citizens is a matter of concern, she pointed out.
Kaur said the vehicle interceptors, which were introduced recently in Guwahati and Nagaon, have been effective in detecting speeding vehicles on the national highways.
She said that the police department was doing its best to ease out congestions in the capital city. She, however, attributed the state of affairs to poor road infrastructure.
Not only are they narrow, but most of them are also unscientific. The problems further aggravate due to unavailability of sufficient parking space in the city and increase in the number of vehicles every passing day, she opined.
On drunk-driving, she said that the drive against drunk- driving would be resumed immediately after the Independence Day celebration.
Fine realization from those found violating traffic rules and regulations has taken a leap in Guwahati ever since the authorities had introduced the interceptor vehicles. Inspector General of police (CWR) LR Bishnoi recently said that already Rs 52 lakh have been collected as fine from erring drivers in Guwahati.
He stated that the interceptor vehicles have been put to the use in the best possible way to make violators accountable on the roads, Bishnoi had said.
