City Cong unit demands Himantas ouster

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, May 26 A meeting of the Guwahati District Committee of the Congress held here yesterday demanded immediate expulsion of Himanta Biswa Sarma and his cohorts from the Congress to save the party in Assam.

A joint statement issued by former MLA Mohan Basumatary, former Guwahati District Congress Committee president Naren Sarma, Guwahati District Congress Committee general secretary Dilip Bhattacharyya, Guwahati District Congress Committee secretary Atiqur Rahman and chairman S C Cell of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee Uttam Das said there is no need to serve showcause notices on Sarma and his cohorts because their statements are well recorded in the footage of the electronic media.

Sarma and his cohorts have hurt lakhs of Congress workers, who have been selflessly working for the party even during its bad days. Yesterdays meeting was of the opinion that the Congress party in Assam is not made up of only 79 legislators, nor these legislators are the lords of the party.

But a section of these legislators led by Himanta Biswa Sarma, out of their greed for power, denigrated the profession of politics and Sarma with his greed for the Chief Ministers chair, put the Congress workers to shame. The dissident activities of these legislators have also made the common people of the State disgusted.

Instead of drawing lessons from the latest results of the Lok Sabha elections, these legislators have hatched a plot to split the party into two entities. This has tainted the image of the century-old Congress party, observed the meeting.

The meeting also called upon all Congress workers of the State to be vocal on the issue.
