City college foundation day

GUWAHATI, Sept 2 - The 66th foundation day of Pragjyotish College was celebrated by all the past and present college fraternity here yesterday, said a press release today.

The college flag was hoisted by the Principal and a former principal of the college. It was followed by floral tributes to the founder of the college, the late Pandit Tirthanath Sarma. An open meeting was held later in the college auditorium. Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University Prof PJ Handique was the chief guest.

Dignitaries like Dr Shyamal Prasad Saikia, DIG, Home Guards and Civil Defence; presidents of Pragjyotish College Alumni Association and Guardians� Forum, Teachers� Unit, Pragjyotish College and first student alumna, Ahalya Gogoi, daughter of renowned scholar and polyglot Pandit Krishna Kanta Handique, were present.

Prof Handique in his speech laid emphasis on socio-economic development and improvement using modern information technology. He urged the college authorities to upgrade the college into an autonomous institution or university.

President of the Pragjyotish College Teachers� Unit Biswajyoti Dev Mahanta spoke on the early history of the college and spoke on its journey.

Dr SP Saikia, a member of Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the college, focused on the rapid development of the college. The presidents of the college Alumni Association and Guardians� Forum expressed satisfaction with the overall development of the college.

The first annual prize day of the college was also held where the students securing ranks and positions in the undergraduate and PG final exams of GU were felicitated and awarded.
