City apparel market takes a beating

GUWAHATI, Oct 19 - Due to the pandemic and lockdown, the apparel market has suffered a major setback during the festive season in the city.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, some businessmen involved with the apparel sector said in comparison to last year, sale of different garment products has fallen by up to 70 per cent this festive season.� � �This time there is no festivity in the market as we have been facing losses for the last five months,� Ravi Jhunjhunwala, a city-based trader said. According to him, the market has faced a setback as people are now not in a mood for celebration because of the uncertain situation caused by the pandemic.

Another garment trader Pawan Sarma said this time footfall of customers has decreased drastically even at Fancy Bazar where heavy crowds during the festive season used to be a normal scenario.

�This time people are buying garments from the roadside vendors because of their low cost. In comparison to last year, only 30 per cent customers stepped into our shop this time,� Pawan Palriwal, a Fancy Bazar-based trader said.

Another trader Madhu Sudan Sikaria said this time production of apparel products also decreased in the mills located outside the State. �Purchasing clothes is not the priority for the public; everyone is now worried about their health. As a result the apparel sector is facing a serious threat,� he said.

Meanwhile, according to Google Trends, hits from Assam in e-commerce websites like Flipkart, Amazon and Myntra, have increased drastically this festive season. The hits have soared by 20-30 per cent. In some sites, the hits went up by 50 pc in the last one month.�Some e-commerce websites have been receiving more hits from other small towns compared to Guwahati.
